Nearly 40 community leaders—including early childhood professionals, K–12 school administrators and teachers, nonprofit leaders, university representatives, and funders—joined Ball Brothers Foundation last month for a day-long Outdoor Learning Field Trip exploring innovative outdoor play and learning spaces across Delaware County.
A Century of Commitment: The YMCA of Muncie
The relationship between the Ball family and the YMCA of Muncie spans more than a century—deeply rooted in a shared belief in the power of community, character, and opportunity.
Muncie’s first YMCA opened its doors in 1875, operating out of churches and homes before eventually renting space at Charles and Walnut Streets. For decades, community leaders hoped for a more permanent facility—but it wasn’t until 1911 that the dream began to take shape. That year, the Ball brothers pledged funds toward a new YMCA building, encouraging the community to raise an additional $50,000 to bring the project to life.
Ball Brothers Foundation Board Retreat Held at Camp Crosley
Earlier this month, Ball Brothers Foundation’s board of directors, associate directors, and staff gathered together for a retreat at Camp Crosley along the shores of Little Tippy (James Lake) in North Webster, Indiana. Established over 100 years ago, Camp Crosley has been near and dear to the Ball family for generations and is a long-time grantee of the foundation.
Grantee Spotlight: Q&A with YMCA of Muncie
In April 2023, the YMCA of Muncie announced plans to construct a new 73,000-square-foot facility on the Muncie Central High School campus to consolidate its previous locations and ensure better reinvestment in equipment and programs to meet community needs. After a successful capital campaign supported by many organizations, including Ball Brothers Foundation, construction is underway and exciting developments are taking shape.
Capital Projects in Downtown Muncie and Beyond Share in $4M Awarded by Ball Brothers Foundation
Ball Brothers Foundation, one of Indiana’s oldest and largest family foundations, awarded 33 grants totaling over $4 million in its first funding round of the year. Among the grants are funding for several organizations with long historical ties to the Ball family that are undertaking transformative capital projects: Ball State University, Camp Crosley (YMCA of Muncie), and the YWCA Central Indiana.
Funding for Transformational Projects in Downtown Muncie Share in $3 Million Awarded by Ball Brothers Foundation
Ball Brothers Foundation approved 28 grants totaling $3 million in its first round of grants for 2023. The grants reflect the foundation’s long-standing commitment to place-based grantmaking. Two of the largest grants approved in this round were to boost facility capital projects in downtown Muncie—YMCA of Muncie and Muncie Civic Theatre.

Ball Brothers Foundation announced today that its board recently approved grants to several organizations throughout Indiana during its October meeting. The majority of the grants will be distributed to local organizations while a select few grants were directed to groups outside the East Central Indiana region.
