Ball Brothers Foundation’s Rapid Grants Provide Timely Support for Local Needs

Recognizing that nonprofit needs don’t always align neatly with traditional grant cycles, Ball Brothers Foundation established its Rapid Grant program in 2003 to provide timely support for organizations facing unique opportunities or urgent needs.

Awarded between February and November each year, Rapid Grants of $5,000 or less help nonprofits in Muncie and Delaware County—and occasionally throughout East Central Indiana—respond quickly to time-sensitive needs. These small but impactful grants can support a wide range of purposes, including professional development for nonprofit staff, travel or equipment expenses, pilot initiatives, or opportunities that arise unexpectedly.

The idea for Rapid Grants was sparked when BBF staff learned about a similar program from another funder at a national conference. The approach offered a way to help nonprofits address pressing needs throughout the year while keeping the foundation’s full board meetings focused on larger, strategic requests.

“Community challenges and opportunities don’t always wait for our regular grant cycles,” said Jud Fisher, president and CEO of Ball Brothers Foundation. “Rapid Grants give us the flexibility to respond quickly and help organizations stay focused on their missions.”

In 2025, Ball Brothers Foundation has awarded 62 Rapid Grants, reflecting the breadth and diversity of needs and opportunities that local nonprofits encounter. A few examples from this year include:

Helping seize unique opportunities

Heartland Film, in partnership with Ball State University’s Radiance Cinema immersive learning program, received support to help BSU students showcase their films at the Indy Shorts International Film Festival—an Academy Award®-qualifying event. The experience provided students with red carpet exposure, networking opportunities, and a deeper appreciation of collaborative work.

Addressing an urgent need

BBF Rapid Grant funding supported the American Red Cross’ response to strong storms that hit Delaware County and surrounding areas in early April. Funding was used to conduct damage assessments, distribute supplies and clean up kits to homeowners, and provide meals for storm victims and volunteers.

Supporting specialized equipment

A Rapid Grant helped the Muncie Fire Department purchase a Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) device, enabling first responders to more quickly diagnose and treat life-threatening internal conditions in the field.

Building capacity through professional development and consulting support

A grant to Purdue Extension supported training public safety professionals, farmers, and students in drone technology. Another Rapid Grant to Minnetrista supported consulting services to assess and grow its donor base, strengthening long-term sustainability for the organization’s mission.

Seeding a new initiative

A grant helped support the launch of Muncie’s VORE Arts Fund, a new revolving loan program designed to provide artists with accessible, low-interest financing to bring creative projects to life.

A limited number of Rapid Grants are awarded each year, with priority given to organizations based in Muncie and Delaware County.
